About Exercise Bikes

This range covers four indoor bikes for home cardio. The Viavito Veloria is a manual studio-style bike with a 9kg flywheel, a 100kg maximum user weight and a 112 x 58 x 102cm footprint (H x W x D). The Renpho AI Smart Exercise Bike has 32 automatic resistance levels and connects to apps such as Zwift and Kinomap over Bluetooth. ProForm offers two iFIT-compatible models: the upright ProForm 225 CSX with 20 magnetic resistance levels, a CoolAire fan and a 125kg user limit, and the ProForm Pro Trainer 500 spin bike with 16 levels and toe cages.

Choose by how you ride. Spin bikes suit standing sprints and classes; an upright bike suits steady, seated sessions. Check the maximum user weight and footprint on each product page, and leave room to get on and off. As a target, the NHS recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, such as cycling, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity. For weights and mats, see our fitness and exercise range.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a spin bike and an exercise bike?

A spin bike copies a road bike position, with a heavy flywheel, adjustable bars and toe cages for standing efforts; the Viavito Veloria and ProForm Pro Trainer 500 are this type. An upright exercise bike, such as the ProForm 225 CSX, has a more upright seat and console, which many people find easier for longer, steady rides.

Is magnetic resistance better than manual resistance?

Magnetic resistance uses magnets rather than friction pads, so there are no pads to wear and the ride is quiet. Electronically controlled systems, like the ProForm 225 CSX with 20 levels and the Renpho AI Smart Bike with 32, can also change resistance automatically with apps. A manual dial, as on the Viavito Veloria, is simpler, with fewer electronics.

How much exercise bike time a week is enough?

The NHS advises adults to do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, plus strength exercises on two or more days. Riding a bike counts as moderate, and the NHS lists riding fast or on hills as vigorous. Five 30-minute rides a week would meet the moderate target.

How much space does an exercise bike need?

Check the footprint on each product page and allow space to get on and off. Listed sizes (H x W x D) are the Viavito Veloria at 112 x 58 x 102cm, the Renpho AI Smart Bike at 125 x 51 x 102cm and the ProForm 225 CSX at 147 x 54 x 88cm.

What weight limit do exercise bikes have?

It varies by model, so check before you buy. Listed maximum user weights are 100kg for the Viavito Veloria, 120kg for the Renpho AI Smart Bike and 125kg for the ProForm 225 CSX. Renpho also lists a rider height range of 4ft 11in to 6ft 1in, which matters for saddle and handlebar adjustment.

Can I use Zwift with an exercise bike?

Yes, with a Bluetooth smart bike that supports it. Renpho lists Zwift, Peloton and Kinomap compatibility for its AI Smart Bike, with resistance changing automatically on virtual hills. The ProForm 225 CSX and Pro Trainer 500 are built around the iFIT app. The manual Viavito Veloria has a tablet shelf for following classes but does not adjust resistance itself.
