About Under Floor Heating Systems
Our underfloor heating range is an electric system for single rooms and renovations. The Varme 200W/m² cable mat comes in ten sizes from 1m² to 10m², with Kevlar-coated cable pre-fixed to a 50cm self-adhesive fibreglass mesh. Each kit includes 1L of floor primer and a mini roller. Pair it with the Varme FH-01 thermostat, which switches up to 16A (3,680W) and reads floor or air temperature through a probe laid between the cables. It suits bathrooms, kitchens, extensions and conservatories with tile or stone floors.
Size the mat to the free floor area, leaving out the bath, toilet and fitted units, and round down: the mesh can be cut, the cable cannot. For running cost, a 4m² mat draws 0.8kW at full output, about 21p an hour at the Ofgem cap average of 26.32p/kWh. A new circuit, or electrical work near a bath or shower, is notifiable under Part P in England, so use a registered electrician. Our heating guide compares running costs.
Frequently asked questions
How much does electric underfloor heating cost to run?
Multiply the mat's power by your unit rate. A 4m² Varme mat at 200W per m² draws 0.8kW at full output, about 21p an hour at the Ofgem cap average of 26.32p per kWh (1 October to 31 December 2026). Once the floor is warm the thermostat cycles the mat off, so the real cost is lower.
What size underfloor heating mat do I need?
Measure the free floor area where people stand, excluding baths, shower trays, toilets and fitted units, then choose the nearest mat size below it. Varme mats run from 1m² to 10m². You can cut the mesh to turn corners but never the heating cable. One FH-01 thermostat handles up to 3,680W, about 18m² of 200W mat.
Can I install electric underfloor heating myself?
Laying the mat is a manageable DIY job if you follow the installation instructions. The electrical connection is different: in England, a new circuit or any alteration near a bath or shower is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so a registered electrician should connect and certify it.
Is electric or wet underfloor heating better?
Electric mats cost less to install and raise the floor only a few millimetres, so they suit single rooms and renovations. Wet systems run warm water from a boiler or heat pump through pipes in the floor; they involve more work to fit but usually cost less to run across large areas such as whole new-build floors.
Which floors can go over electric underfloor heating?
The Varme mat is designed mainly for tiles, stone and marble, laid onto concrete, plywood or cement tile-backer boards. Its listing also mentions vinyl, laminate and thin carpets. For wood, vinyl or laminate, check the flooring maker's maximum floor temperature and set the thermostat's floor limit to match.
Do I need a special thermostat for underfloor heating?
Yes. You need a thermostat rated for the mat's load that can read floor temperature, so the floor does not overheat. The Varme FH-01 switches up to 16A (3,680W), includes a floor probe, and offers floor, air or combined sensing with a 7-day schedule and frost protection.
